SEO Made Easy: The ONE technique every online business owner must follow
Written by Smartt Team on May 5, 2009
SEO, also known as Search Engine Optimization is the buzz word on the internet these days. Everyone thinks they know what it is and what it means. Some people will tell you it’s all about keyword stuffing, others will tell you it’s about using meta tags in your code. Others claim that all you have to do is buy links from India to get a Google number one. Some companies will even charge you a monthly fee to rank number one without ever telling you what they’re doing. There’s so much controversy surrounding SEO, it’s no wonder that most people are confused about what it actually is.
Generally the SEO and online marketing industry is very secretive about what they do and how they increase page rankings on search engines. The mystery surrounding SEO only perpetuates the myth that it’s hard to do. But it’s not as complicated or mysterious as you may think. In fact, once you know what you’re doing, it’s easy.
If you want to know what it is we internet marketers and SEO masters do all day, I’ll let you in on a little secret. Now, lean in close to your screen and don’t let anyone around you see what you’re reading because if this trick gets out, everyone will start doing it and we’ll lose our power.
Ready? Okay… here it is: Update your website regularly.
If you do nothing else, updating your site regularly will help increase your rankings with search engines. Said another way, all else being equal, the website that is updated regularly will rank higher than the site that isn’t.
What happens is this: Search engines come to your site to look for and index content. When they visit your site, they’ll look around for a while and see what’s there. When you first put your website up, it’s new and fresh in Google’s virtual mind. It knows about you and remembers your site and what it’s about. So when someone enters your keyword, your site will come up on the index.
At the beginning the search engines will come to your site a couple of times, looking for new content. If they don’t see anything new, they will assume they’ve indexed everything and that their job is done on your site. With nothing left to index, they stop visiting your site. Eventually, they’ll forget about you, stop coming around and stop indexing your content.
This is not where you want to be. When the search engines forget about you, stop coming around and stop indexing your site, your page drops in rankings.
Instead of leaving your site stagnant and static, keep it fresh and update it constantly. This has the opposite effect on the search engines. Instead of forgetting about you, when you update your content regularly, you will actually train them to visit your site more frequently. This keeps you fresh in their mind and your content ranking high. When Google visits your site, it remembers you exist. It remembers what your page is about and is able to index you in the search engines when someone types in your keyword. The more you update, the more Google will visit your site. The more Google visits your site, the more it is able to index and remember about you. In turn, Google will recall your site when one of your keywords is entered into the search bar and your site will rank higher on the results page.
It’s almost too simple. If you never do anything else, if you never do any other SEO, remember this one trick. Remember to update your website. Of course, that’s only one piece of the puzzle, but it’s a big one and it’s one that anyone can do.
