System Administrator – UNIX Specialist
Location: Vancouver, BC – Canada (must be willing to relocate)
Summary of Position:
We are looking to hire a self-driven System Administrator – UNIX Specialist who revels in continuously working to improve systems and processes. You are a problem-solver who thrives on analyzing problems and providing key solutions. Specifically, you excel in identifying key strengths and weaknesses in the multitude of solutions to any challenging UNIX system issues. As a crucial member of SmarttNet Technical Department team, you will be responsible for and participate in the designing, implementation, configuration, maintenance and improvement of systems and processes to ensure the availability and consistent performance in the services we provide.
Administration
• Administer and maintain UNIX operating systems and applications including installation, configuration, patching, upgrading, performance monitoring and tuning, and documentation.
• Participate in designing, implementing, and administering ongoing security practices for UNIX server platform.
• Participate in reviewing, designing, recommending and implementing hardware and software solutions to support customers’ and company’s IT requirements and business objectives.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technical and industry advancements.
• Provide pre-sales support.
• Back up and support other system specialist as required.
Support
• Provide advanced technical support via telephone, email, ticketing system, online chat and in person.
• Provide documentation and tracking of support inquiries via ticketing system.
• Escalate and follow up on unsolved support inquiries.
• Coordinate and work with third-party vendors to resolve technical issues.
• Provide guidance, mentorship and assistance to internal staff in the resolution of technical issues.
Other Duties
• Stress-test new services, software and hardware.
• Update and maintain the Network Topology Map.
• Provide weekly written reports to immediate supervisor.
• Other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• 3+ years of working experience and knowledge of FreeBSD version 7 and 8, and various Linux distributions with kernel 2.4 and 2.6.
• 5+ years of working experience and knowledge of Perl, PHP and JavaScript.
• 5+ years of working experience and knowledge of MySQL and PostgreSQL
• 2+ years of working experience and knowledge of VMware ESX(i) (VCP a plus)
• Working experience and knowledge of Windows server 2003 and 2008
• Working experience and knowledge of IP networking and infrastructure
• Working experience and knowledge of computer and network security practices
• Working experience and knowledge of IT related standards, protocols, practices and applications
• Excellent problem solving skills & conflict resolution skills
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
• Ability to work independently & collaboratively in a fast paced environment
• Ability to deliver on multiple projects with competing priorities and schedules
Benefits
• An annual salary range of $43,000- $65,000 based on experience
